Microsoft is releasing 1 million Gamertags
If there has been a Gamertag or two that you’ve always wanted on Xbox Live but it’s always been unavailable, you might have a chance to snag it this week.
Microsoft just announced that on May 18 at 11 a.m. PST, they are releasing close to one million inactive Gamertags back to the public. According to Will Tuttle, Xbox Wire’s editor-in-chief, the Gamertags are from the original Xbox era that never migrated over to Xbox 360. Now it’ll still cost you $10 to change your Gamertag, but for some of you, that’s well worth it.
So what are the names they’re releasing? Microsoft won’t say but here are some hints:
- Proper Names
- Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
- Types of Food
- Geography and Travel
- Science and Technology
- Math and Numbers
- Some of the greatest inventions of all time
If you want to change your Gamertag, you need an Xbox Live Gold account, and to go through the same process as you would any other time you tried to change your name. Then you basically start plugging in the names you’ve always wanted to see if they’re available. Happy Gamertag hunting!
